Taking care of the smile requires daily commitment, and can be difficult especially for children. For patients of all ages, building up healthy oral habits can ensure a lifetime of strong, healthy teeth that are resistant to dental issues like periodontitis and cavities. Additionally, by investing in oral health today, it can help avoid costly procedures in the future. Dr. Todd Martin wants families to have good oral health and offers these tips to help adults and children in Charlotte.

What are Good Home Practices?

Good oral health starts at home and is improved when visiting the dentist for routine cleanings and exams. The goal with home care is to remove food particles that encourage bacterial growth, and to clean bacteria and plaque that has built up from the day. Although both of these actions are simple, they require some attention to ensure optimal cleanliness.

Here are some things you can do to improve your oral health at home:
Brush for two minutes, morning and night
Floss at least once a day
Use a dentist-recommended toothpaste
Don’t eat anything after brushing at night
For a brighter smile, avoid teeth-staining beverages and foods

How Do I Encourage Good Habits?

With any lifestyle changes or improvements, practice and commitment are required for successful implementation. New habits can be especially difficult to adapt, and requires daily action, at regular times. Brush and floss right before getting into bed, or do so at the same time as your spouse or partner. Make it the first thing you do when you get out of bed, before breakfast or your morning cup of coffee.

When helping your child establish good oral health habits, it’s helpful to brush and floss with them. Kids see that we take care of our teeth and want to do the same. Tooth brushing apps from Disney® and other companies make it fun and easy for your child to brush their teeth for the full time. Other apps include games and interactive features that can improve the oral home care experience for your child.

What Else Can I Do?

Besides brushing and flossing, the best way to improve oral health is to improve the diet. Drinking more water and eating healthier, natural foods will be beneficial to the smile and overall health. Sodas, candy, smoking, and alcohol are classic culprits in supporting bacterial growth. By increasing intake of healthier foods and beverages, and also by maintaining regular oral health practices, your smile will be brighter and healthier.

Gum disease is a common dental problem that affects millions of Americans. It comes with a range of symptoms, some serious, but is reversible in many cases, especially if diagnosed early. In its initial phases, gum disease can go unnoticed and thus untreated, but below is information that can help you diagnose gum disease and what your Charlotte Dentist, Dr. Todd Martin, can do to help.

Gum Disease 101

Our mouths always have bacteria in them, but they’re not always directly damaging our oral health. Food particles and mucus become fuel for bacteria to produce plaque, a sticky substance that forms on our teeth. Over time this plaque turns into tartar, which contributes to plaque development and the spread of gum disease below the gums and encourage decay. If you regularly brush and floss, then it will be difficult for gum disease to advance beyond the early stages. Routine dental visits and the thorough cleanings that accompany them will also curb the spread of bacteria.

Advanced Periodontal Disease

In few cases, usually when oral health has been neglected, gum disease may advance deeply into the gums and teeth, causing gum recession, tooth loss, or bone decay. This is a crucial stage for your oral health, and recovery from this condition will not be easy. The more advanced gum disease is, the more thorough your dental treatments must be. Your Charlotte dentist offers transformative treatments that can restore health and function to the smile.

Treatments include:

Root Planing and Scaling – By using proven techniques, your dentist removes tartar that has spread from the surface of your teeth to the root structure beneath the gums. This procedure is common and will help stop infection from spreading throughout the smile. Root planing and scaling may be used in conjunction with other procedures patients may need, such as cavity removal or more advanced treatments, depending on how advanced the gum disease is.

Laser Treatments – Instead of using traditional dental tools, a laser can also remove the calcified plaque on your teeth and beneath the gums. This new way to treat the gums is relatively comfortable, and purges bacteria completely. For some patients, dental laser treatment shows faster healing times and can improved gum regeneration.

Tooth extraction is a common procedure that is often recommended as the result of teeth decay, bone resorption, or failing restorations. After teeth extraction, it’s important to follow dentist-recommended guidelines to protect yourself from infection and ensure a comfortable recovery. Here are some tips to promote healing process and improve your post-extraction experience.

Soft Food is the Best Food

The extraction area is going to be sensitive for a few days, so eating soft foods or liquids is best to let the area heal. Harder foods have the potential to remove the blood clot, get stuck in the socket, or cause infection; overall this decreases the progression of the healing process. Stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, soups, or blended beverages. Avoid drinking through straws, as the suction can remove the blood clot as well.

It’s important to continue eating as you feel hungry and not to avoid food for fear of interfering with the healing process coconut water is an easy way to improve blood sugar while also keeping the body hydrated and shored up with electrolytes.

Cold Compresses

Icing the face and jaw is a good way to bring down inflammation and discomfort. You should apply ice for a full day after the procedure, placing ice packs, Ziploc® bags of ice, or even bags of cold peas on the swollen areas. The rule to follow is ice for 20 minutes, then remove the ice. After a few hours, this will greatly reduce swelling and help overall recovery.

Rest and Rinse

We recommend inactivity during recovery time. Working out, sports, or mildly strenuous activity may increase bleeding and cause discomfort. After multiple extractions, patients may require a few days to heal. When sleeping and reclining, try to put more pillows behind your head or back. Resting in a more vertical position will help decrease blood flow to the extraction site.

After 72 hours, rinse your mouth with warm salt water, which will encourage healing and cleanliness. Mixing one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water creates the ideal rinse.

A clean, bright smile inspires self-confidence and is appealing to the eye. Although it’s possible for anyone to have a bright smile, for many it can be difficult due to genetics or simply because we all need our morning coffee. Dr. Todd Martin, your Charlotte dentist, wants everyone to have a smile they can be proud of, and this blog has some tips and tricks to achieve that smile.

A Brighter Smile from Home

Individuals looking for a whiter smile without spending extra money can instead invest time in altering habits at home. Daily consumption behaviors regularly contribute to staining the teeth or increase plaque buildup.

Proper Home CareBrushing and flossing habits are essential to having good oral health, but also the easiest way to have a brighter smile in general. Follow these recommended guidelines: Brush twice a day and floss at least once. Use a soft brush and your preferred toothpaste to clean teeth, brushing for two minutes. Floss with the traditional waxed variety, however, many people enjoy floss sticks or use water picks for a convenient alternative. With good oral habits, anyone can ward off stains, cavities, and keep the smile healthy.

Avoid Teeth Staining – Coffee, black teas, and sodas easily stain teeth, and if consumed daily they will significantly affect the brightness of the smile. To avoid the staining, drink through a straw and add cream to coffee. Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in your daily intake, and their fibers will polish teeth and help breath smell fresher.

Alcohol and nicotine are also staining factors, as they dry out teeth and gums, encouraging bacteria to grow and leaving plaque all over the smile. Not only do alcohol and nicotine affect the look of the smile, they also heighten the risk of periodontal disease.

Solutions for a Brighter Smile from your Charlotte Dentist

Although the tips mentioned above are great for general dental health, your Charlotte dentist wants you to know about effective ways we can help the smile.

Zoom!® Teeth Whitening – With this proven procedure, teeth can be whitened to near perfection in under an hour. By using a safe chemical gel and a specialized light, the teeth are whitened to the right shade that will enhance the look of the smile.

When searching for a cosmetic dentist that will provide excellent care, it’s important to find qualities that appeal to you in the dentist you select. Ideally, your cosmetic dentist should provide services that comprehensively care for the aesthetics of your unique smile.

From porcelain veneers to advanced services like dental implant placement, an experienced and well-trained dentist will have a breadth of procedures that can be tailored to every patient’s needs. A dedicated cosmetic dentist takes the smile goals of a patient and meets them with the proper practices.

What to Look For in a Cosmetic Dentist

Well-equipped cosmetic dentists offer advanced procedures that help them achieve patient’s cosmetic dental goals with pinpoint accuracy. One of the most popular cosmetic dental improvements, dental implants protect the jaw from degradation and can fully restore the smile. All procedures that your dentist provides, such as, root canal therapy and veneer placement are delicate procedures that need a gentle, steady hand.

There are many dentists that offer the aforementioned treatments, but not all will perfectly shape the teeth and color match them to the smile. For the best results, experienced cosmetic dentists will recommend using porcelain-based fillings and crowns to achieve the most natural looking dental improvement.

Cosmetic Dental Improvements are more than Just Looks

Although cosmetic dentistry improves the look of the smile, it’s important that the dentition retains its function as well. Cosmetic dentists worth their salt have a wealth of experience that ensures natural teeth are protected and improve the overall appearance of the smile. Some dentists just want to cover up problems in the smile rather than solves issues and then improve the looks. If you have cracked, chipped, or discolored teeth, your dentist should incorporate the right restorative treatment into your overall cosmetic treatment plan.

Dental Implants are hands down the best way to replace missing teeth. It is a proven technology that has been filling gaps in patients’ teeth for many years now.

Our Charlotte practice offers dental implants to patients who want to restore their smile. ART Dentistry wants to give patients the opportunity to have a fully functional smile without covering up the palate with dentures, or without damaging other teeth with dental bridges. Here is an overview of how dental implants work.

Advanced Dental Implants

When teeth are damaged beyond repair, either by infection or accident, they must be extracted. This is great for you, for there’s no longer a dying tooth in your mouth, but then other oral health problems may arise. Without teeth and their roots, the jaw bone loses integrity. Over time the jaw bone loses strength and bone density without our teeth roots. This leads to a fragile jaw that could break more easily and a sunken look that adds years to your face.
Dental implants, however, are installed directly into the jaw and fuse to it, just like a tooth’s root. Made of titanium, dental implants become a new structure for patients’ jaw bones to hold on to.

Dental Implant Procedure in Charlotte

The process for placing implants and dental restorations, is simple. It requires a few visits to your dentist: examination and consultation, placement, healing, then placing restorations. Depending on how much bone loss a jaw has experienced, patients may need a bone graft. The dentist numbs the mouth before inserting dental implants, a temporary covering is placed over the implant, which will protect it while the implant fuses to the bone in the next few months. Then, the restoration is fashioned and then placed.

Each dental restoration is designed to match the shade of your other teeth and blend in seamlessly. From single porcelain crowns to overdentures, your dental implants will support many kinds of restorations and shave off years from the face and teeth. This long-lasting technology will be with you for a lifetime and will improve necessary oral functions such as eating, talking, and teeth cleaning.
