Causes and symptoms of Oral Cancer

Oral cancer often develops in individuals who smoke and drink heavily. Smokeless tobacco products can increase one’s risk of developing oral lesions. Repeated and prolong exposure to the sun can cause lip cancer. And the Human Papillomavirus places people at risk. If you have had oral cancer before, you may be likely to develop it again.

Our dentists at ART Dentistry are committed to extensive and comprehensive oral exams that are preventive and diagnostic. Some symptoms we will be looking for are:

  • A sore or irritation in the mouth that doesn’t go away
  • Red or white patches
  • Pain, tenderness, or numbness in the mouth or lips
  • A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust, or small eroded area within the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your tongue or jaw
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment at our Charlotte dental practice or with your primary physician right away!

What does the process of Oral Cancer screening involve?

Here at ART Dentistry in South Park, we utilize modern technology to provide the best diagnosis and screening for oral cancer. Velscope, is a wireless, handheld scope that enhances the way we can view any abnormalities that are related to oral cancer. The technology stimulates cells and stroma by a blue light, which allows tissues to self-fluoresce to detect changes of them in a non-invasive manner. We ask patients to rinse using a special dye, and then utilizing Velscope technology, we can look for any abnormalities and let you know of any are suspicious. Early detection matters, for there is a five-year survival rate at about 83% for oral cancer patients. In our medical office, creating a comfortable screening process that is effective and efficient is essential.
